University students paid homage on Monday (September 14) to the Spanish exchange student who was killed in Mexico, a case local authorities are investigating as a feminicide.

Students lit candles and placed flowers during a tribute in memory of the 21-year-old Spanish Claudia Tacoronte, who arrived in the central state of Morelos in an exchange program less than a month ago, according to the state prosecutor.

The homage took place outside the Faculty of Education Sciences, where the victim attended during her studies at the University of Granada, in Spain.

The Spanish consulate in Mexico met with the state governor, Margarita Gonzalez, whose government expressed her condolences and said the state government was open to collaborating in the investigation.

Tacoronte's is the fourth femicide case of a student from the Autonomous University of Morelos State (UAEM) in 2026.

Kimberly Joselin Ramos and Karol Toledo, who disappeared and were found dead days later, sparked protests among the university community in March, with students taking over a campus for weeks demanding security measures and justice, Mexican media reported.

Morelos recorded 21 femicides between January and July this year, according to official data, while 380 were registered nationwide over the same period.
