D606-MEXICO SHEINBAUM ACUERDO EEUU
STORY: On Saturday (July 12), Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her belief that an agreement with the United States can be reached before the 30% tariffs announced by President Donald Trump take effect on August 1st.
"We believe, based on what our colleagues discussed yesterday, that we will reach an agreement with the U.S. Government and, of course, under better conditions," the president stated during an event in the Mexican state of Sonora.
Sheinbaum revealed that officials from her government met on Friday (July 11) with representatives of the Trump administration in Washington to seek an agreement that would prevent the imposition of tariffs on Mexican exports to the United States.
"Always keep a cool head to face any problem. We represent our people, we represent the dignity of the Mexican people," Sheinbaum affirmed, reiterating that "there is something that is never negotiated, and that is the sovereignty of our country."
Trump threatened on Saturday to impose a 30% tariff on imports from Mexico and the European Union starting August 1st, following weeks of negotiations with the United States' main trading partners that did not result in a global trade agreement.
