D010-SUIZA LLEGADA VANCE NEGOCIACIONES PAZ

A convoy carrying U.S. Vice President JD Vance arrived at the Buergenstock resort on Sunday (June 21) ahead of talks with Iran seeking a durable end to their war while disagreeing over Iran's claim that it had closed the vital Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. and Iran had agreed to a 60-day ceasefire for the negotiations, but Tehran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Saturday (June 20) declared the Strait of Hormuz shut in response to Israeli strikes in Lebanon, although the U.S. military said commercial vessels kept operating.

Those developments could complicate the talks in which both sides want to advance an interim deal brokered by Pakistan and signed on Wednesday by Presidents Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian to end an almost four-month-long war.

Vance arrived at the scenic Buergenstock resort, accessed by a narrow road snaking through leafy hills and several security checkpoints manned by armed guards, after landing at Emmen Air Base early on Sunday, accompanied by second lady Usha Vance.

4. (SOUNDBITE)(English) U.S. VICE PRESIDENT JD VANCE, SAYING:

“Looking forward to starting the technical talks with the Iranians, the Pakistanis and the Qataris. Our understanding is that the Iranians just landed, the Qataris and Pakistanis are discussing technical issues on the ground. So look, we'll have a couple of days to talk through getting things done the right way. There's a lot to discuss, but we're going to go through it all.”

6. (SOUNDBITE)(English) U.S. VICE PRESIDENT JD VANCE, SAYING:

REPORTER ASKING OFF CAMERA: “Sir, the fighting in Lebanon seems to threaten the entire process, what could you explain about that?”

VANCE: “Well, Marco (Rubio) and the entire team have been actively getting to know what’s going on with Lebanon. Despite the headlines, things are actually getting better there and things are slowing down a little bit. I think it's going to be something we're just going to have to continuously manage to ensure that you know Israel and Lebanon are both safe and secure. That’s the ultimate goal of it, to make the whole region safe and secure. The big problem is that you have somebody will shoot, and then somebody will respond and you have kind of a chicken and egg problem, where you've just got to stop the shooting long enough to see the ceasefire take hold. That’s what we’re trying to do, so we do keep on working at it, and things have gotten better.”

8. (SOUNDBITE)(English) U.S. VICE PRESIDENT JD VANCE, SAYING:

REPORTER ASKING: “Sir, can you tell us more specifically about your schedule and what would make this a successful trip for you?”

VANCE: “Well, I think number one is going to set up things in the right way, getting the actual structure of negotiation in place. So the way we are going to do this, we’re going to have principal level of political leadership at the top and then obviously ... to stay on the ground, and I might like to stay at what appears to be a beautiful place, I can only be there for a day or two. I think we're hopefully making progress on the nuclear issue, making progress on the Lebanon ceasefire issue. These are the two big things our people are really focused on and it's up to the Iranians to have their issues to be discussed as well. I'll see you guys on the other side. Thank you." /VANCE BOARDING AIRCRAFT
