High temperatures lingered in Milan on Wednesday (July 2) with tourists trying to cool off in the shadow of the Duomo Cathedral as a heatwave hit the Peninsula.
Red alerts were issued in 18 Italian cities, including Milan, as a severe heatwave gripped Europe, triggering widespread health alerts.
As high temperatures hit the city, Paris-Milan rail service remained disrupted because of a mudslide on the French side of the Alps, with full service not expected to be fully restored until mid-July, French rail operator SNCF said.
''We're a bit lost, and they don't actually offer any alternative solutions in France'', tourist Alicante Odic said.
Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent, heating up at twice the global average, according to the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service, with extreme heatwaves starting earlier in the year and persisting for longer.

''Yesterday when I heard about the disruption I tried, I opened a ticket with both Trainline and the railways and this morning they still hadn't replied, so I came in person to try to understand and they told me that until Friday anyway (the trains) are disrupted.''

''In the end, we discovered that our train had been cancelled, but we hadn't been warned at all by the SNCF. In fact, we found out after the weather forecast, which means that, well, we're a bit lost, and they don't actually offer any alternative solutions in France. So we're a bit stuck here in Italy today, which means it's a bit of a problem. Well, it's more of a big worry for us, that's for sure.''
