With the heatwave in Germany ongoing and temperatures reaching up to 37 degrees Celsius (98 degrees Fahrenheit), people did their best to keep cool on Wednesday (July 2).

In the western German town of Cologne, a misting system was installed which provided a respite from the heat for young and old.

"Wonderful, so pleasant. I've just come back from sport, that was really nice," said one woman.

In Munich in the country's south, people flocked to the local Eisbachwelle natural surf spot in the Bavarian capital's English Garden park.

"There's nothing better in summer," said surfer Andi Muellner.

Following a deadly accident involving a surfer who drowned two months ago, the area was reopened for the public just in time for what is the hottest day of the year to date.
