X080-TURQUIA PELEA EN EL PARLAMENTO
A brawl broke out in Turkish parliament on Wednesday (February 11) as members of the main opposition tried to block newly-appointed Justice Minister Akin Gurlek from taking his oath.
Since his appointment as Istanbul chief prosecutor in 2024, Gurlek has overseen a wave of arrests and indictments targeting the Republican People's Party (CHP), including investigations into the Istanbul mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, Erdogan's main political rival who has been jailed since his arrest in March last year.
Erdogan appointed Gurlek justice minister on Wednesday, drawing fierce criticism and defiance from the CHP.
CHP members tried to block Gurlek from approaching the podium to take his oath in the parliament's general assembly, which led to pushing and fisticuffs between the members of the two parties.
Gurlek later took his oath surrounded by a group of AK Party members, who cheered and applauded him.
