STORY: Gisele Pelicot, a symbol of France’s fight against sexual violence, confronted the only man appealing his conviction in the Mazan rape case on Wednesday (October 8), telling the court: “At what moment did I give you my consent? Never!”

Husamettin Dogan, who denies the charges despite the existence of incriminating videos, arrived in court masked. The third day of the hearing opened with the screening of 14 clips showing Pelicot unconscious and unresponsive during sexual acts filmed in 2019.

Dogan claimed he was manipulated by Pelicot’s ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, and insisted: “I’ve never raped anyone.”

Outside the courthouse, members of the public queued to attend the trial. “It’s support, it’s anger, and it’s a need to change things,” said Cathy Aberdam, a speech specialist from Nîmes.

Retired teacher Roland Veuillet added: “I came to show solidarity. She experienced something horrible, terrible.”

Dogan faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. A verdict is expected Thursday (October 9).
