X073-SUECIA IGLESIA TRASLADADA
Crowds of people turned up on Wednesday (August 20) to watch Sweden's landmark Kiruna Church continue its move to a new home, to make way for the expansion of the world's largest underground iron ore mine.
People watched as the 600-ton, 113-year-old church which had been jacked up from its foundations and hefted onto a specially built trailer, continued its way down the winding road which had been widened especially for this trip.
After an overnight stop, the red-painted church - one of Sweden's largest wooden structures, often voted its most beautiful – continued its 5km (3 miles) journey to its final destination in a brand-new Kiruna city centre.
A project manager that is involved in the move, said progress would be slower than on Tuesday (August 19) since there were some “tight spots” to navigate.
The move is part of a 30-year project to relocate thousands of people and buildings from the Lapland city.
