X072-CHINA VISITA DEL MINISTRO DE EXTERIORES IRANÍ
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Wednesday (May 6) that China viewed Iran as "having demonstrated its capabilities and strength" after the war, as he met China's top diplomat Wang Yi in Beijing with peace talks between Tehran and Washington at a critical stage.
Araqchi said China believed Iran's international standing had risen and that "a new era of cooperation" lay ahead.
He said the two sides reviewed the war, ongoing negotiations with the United States, Iran's nuclear programme, sanctions and the Strait of Hormuz.
The visit was Araqchi's first trip to China since the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran disrupted global oil supplies, threatening energy security for China, the world's top crude importer. Wang said a complete cessation of hostilities was imperative and that restarting the conflict was "unacceptable," according to China's state television CCTV.
Iran said separately on Wednesday that it was reviewing a new U.S. proposal, after sources said Washington and Tehran were closing in on a one-page memorandum to end the war while leaving issues such as Iran's nuclear programme for later negotiations.
