X070-FILIPINAS RESCATES TERREMOTO
Rescuers on Wednesday (October 1) retrieved the bodies of a missing mother and son who were trapped under a collapsed pension house after a powerful quake hit the central Philippines and killed at least 69 people.
Rescuers in Bogo City, closest to the epicentre of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake, retrieved the lifeless bodies after digging through the rubble for hours to find the two missing victims.
Authorities, who urged for help for hospitals inundated with the injured, said they feared the eventual toll would be even higher following the earthquake, which struck in waters off the central holiday island of Cebu late on Tuesday (September 30).
Buildings came crashing down, including a church that was more than 100 years old. Shops, homes and bridges were damaged across the island's northern coast and power was cut.
Aftershocks continued throughout Wednesday, as authorities set up mobile kitchens for hundreds of evacuees and raced to provide temporary power as night approached.
