X068-EEUU CELEBRACION VICTORIA PRIMER MUSULMAN
Supporters of Progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed celebrated on Wednesday (November 4) after he won Michigan's open Senate seat on Tuesday (November 3), becoming the first Muslim elected to the chamber.
He defeated Mike Rogers, a former congressman and FBI agent, who entered the race with Trump's backing and sought to falsely portray El-Sayed, an Egyptian-American born in Michigan, as a religious extremist,
Democrats seized control of both the Senate and House on Tuesday, scoring sweeping victories in Republican strongholds for the first time in generations as tens of millions of voters delivered a scathing rebuke to President Donald Trump.
Voters in conservative bastions who had propelled the president to whis second term in office just two years ago swung dramatically toward Democrats, fuelled by deep frustration over the unpopular war with Iran, anxiey over the high cost of living and anger at Trump's stewadship of the country.

"I mean, it's hard to even describe in words how thrilled and happy we are. I can't think of a single better human being to be elected to represent us in Michigan, in America. Just overcoming all the hatred, the lies, the vitriol. For Michiganders to stand up and to reject that outright, it makes us so proud to be from this state."

"He's probably one of the most empathetic people that we have ever come across in terms of a politician. I mean, very much a straight shooter, got that Michigan grit and that Michigan scrappiness, that he says things, he says what he means, he stays on message, and he doesn't... All that noise and all the vitriol and all the hate, you know, he ignored it."

8. (00:01:35;06) (SOUNDBITE) (English) RALLY ATTENDEE, RON BUSBY, SAYING:
"Our politics have to be so much bigger than the narrowness of the Republican Party these days. And I think it has to be so much bigger than the baseline racism that feels deeply entrenched in the politics that they often are defaulting to. And I think that's what I find really disappointing in, like, not having a real sincere strategy for progress in the future. The past two years have been wasted. And I think that that, to me, feels like the really disappointing part of my youth. I have not had a presidential election without Donald Trump on the ballot. And to me, this is a really great idea of what the future looks like without him. And it looks like one of diversity, of curiosity, of creativity. That's what I'm excited about."
9. (00:02:18;23) (SOUNDBITE) (English) RALLY ATTENDEE, ERUM SHAKIR, SAYING:
"The way he handled it with such grace was just amazing for all of us. He made it about his identity, but for me, it was about his principles and values and his ethics. And I think that's what pulled the American people in, not just his Muslim identity. It's what he stood for."
10. (00:02:34;23) (SOUNDBITE) (English) RALLY ATTENDEE, AMANI AL-KHATAHTBEH, SAYING:
"Seeing a figure like Abdul come on the national scene, I'm feeling relief. I'm thinking, thank God. I'm thinking, finally. And I'm thinking it's decades in the making. I believe that Abdul is a representative of this reaction to a moment that demands for more action, that demands more people that are underrepresented to speak up, to stand up, and to come from the communities that they claim to represent. So he really is a symbol of what the next generation is looking for in terms of our leadership."
