Leaders of European countries and the EU institutions posted messages of support to Spain on Wednesday (October 28) following a deadly train crash south of Madrid that killed at least 30 people.

"Today, Europe mourns with you," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote.

French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro also sent their condolences and support with the victims' families, the injured and the rescue teams.

Regional authorities said two high-speed trains operated by Renfe and Iryo collided just after 9 a.m. (0800 GMT) causing two Iryo wagons to derail. The cause is not yet clear.

It is the second deadly accident in less than a year on the line connecting Madrid to the southern Andalusia region.
