EVIAN-LES-BAINS AND PUBLIER, FRANCE

U.S. President Donald Trump, along with other leaders at the G7 summit in France, acknowledged that Russia does not want peace in its war with Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday (June 17).

This showed a "real change in approach" from the United States regarding the Ukraine war, Macron said.

He said it was vital that Iran, Hezbollah and Israel do not resume fighting after a preliminary deal between the United States and Iran to end their war was struck.

Macron also said artificial intelligence frontier models must not be allowed to fall into the hands of authoritarian regimes, and democracies must co-operate on this topic.

2. (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL MACRON, SAYING (SOUNDBITE OVERLAID BY WIDE SHOTS OF MACRON AT LECTERN):

“So (U.S.) President Donald Trump, like all of us, we simply noted that there was no serious willingness from Russia, today, to discuss peace. And so, I do not know how to tell you whether there will be a before, an after, it is not for me to judge, it is the facts that will tell you, the Evian summit. What I can tell you is that there was a shift, there was an Evian moment, certainly on Ukraine. And this moment is that everyone listened to the state of the situation (given) by (Ukrainian) President (Volodymyr) Zelensky with a lot of respect, that everyone noted that Ukraine was resisting much better than some could have thought and that Russia was in a difficult situation and that all of us said: we are going to increase our support to Ukraine, that all of us said: we are going to increase the pressure on Russia and that all of us said: we must stay this course."

4. (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL MACRON, SAYING (SOUNDBITE OVERLAID BY WIDE SHOTS OF MACRON AT LECTERN):

“I think very much that this Evian summit is a very profound change of the approach, a willingness of the United States of America to work with the Europeans in support of Ukraine, a common willingness to move forward on this issue. And what has been noted in terms of military support on the defence systems, on the long-range capabilities and on the licensing, it is absolutely key."

5. MACRON LISTENING TO QUESTION FROM JOURNALIST

6. (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL MACRON, SAYING (SOUNDBITE OVERLAID BY WIDE SHOTS OF MACRON AT LECTERN):

“So, in the short term at least, we know the protagonists and it is a call to their responsibilities. Iran, obviously, has an imminent responsibility. It is the one that must ensure that neither it itself directly, nor Hezbollah, come to degrade the situation. And Israel also has a responsibility in respecting this ceasefire as far as it is concerned. And I know that this was also the subject of many discussions between President Trump and (Israeli) Prime Minister Netanyahu. President Trump, in any case, has been very clear on this point with our full support."

8. (SOUNDBITE) (French) FRENCH PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL MACRON, SAYING (SOUNDBITE OVERLAID BY WIDE SHOTS OF MACRON AT LECTERN):

“The challenge - these are famous (artificial intelligence) frontier models. We must manage to better regulate them to avoid them falling into the hands of authoritarian regimes or people who could threaten our cybersecurity or our societies. But to do this, the answer cannot be non-cooperation between democracies. And so we are in the process of building from the ground up, and that is what we are going to build in the coming months, a kind of platform of discussion and cooperation between some democracies faced with the risks of artificial intelligence."
