Wildfires fanned by a heatwave and strong winds kept on raging across southern Europe on Wednesday (August 13), burning houses, farms and factories and forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents and tourists.

A timelapse video showed a wildfire spreading across hills close to a residential area on the Greek island of Zakynthos on Tuesday (August 12).

Reuters independently verified the location of the videeo by matching buildings, terrain, street layout to file and satellite imagery. The date was verified through corroborating reports from local media.

Firefighters in the southern Albanian town of Delvina battle wildfires that have encircled the city.

The country's defence minister said on Wednesday (August 13) that strong winds and excessive heat caused the fire to spread.

"Today we had an extreme event - because, of course, of the extreme temperatures and winds - that we had to face in Delvina. It's a relatively small city in southern Albania but with a very important both historical heritage and cultural heritage. And we had to, basically, enforce some evacuations in some parts of the city and also to strengthen the number of both the military forces and the local firefighting forces."

Locals attempted to douse a wildfire threatening a yard full of horses on the island of Chios in the early morning hours on Wednesday (August 13) as the fire raged on the island.

The horse yard was located near the large village of Volissos, where a local reporter witnessed at least one house being damaged by the fire. She said the horses were removed and not harmed.

Video footage showed leaping orange flames approaching the horse enclosure as a man fought the flames with a hose.

A wildfire near the city of Patras, in western Greece, prompted the evacuation of at least 25 settlements on Tuesday (August 12) and Wednesday (August 13), as fires persisted throughout the country.

Red flames and dark smoke billowed over a cement factory that was set alight by the fast-spreading wildfire, which swept through olive tree orchards and forests, and disrupted train and road traffic.

Firefighters fought to tame a wildfire in Spain’s Zamora region on Tuesday night (August 12), after the blaze broke out on Sunday (August 10) in the province and spread to neighbouring Leon.

Firefighters were concentrating their efforts on preventing the flames from reaching the small towns scattered across the area, such as San Esteban de Nogales and Carracedo de Vidriales.

More than 5,000 people have been evacuated in the north-central Castile and Leon region, Spain's largest.
