EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called for stronger protection of Europe's critical infrastructure on Wednesday (November 19), highlighting the need for rapid military mobility as essential for the continent's defence.

"Our critical infrastructure needs more protection. The fast movement of Europe's militaries is essential for European defence. We have to ensure that forces can be in the right place and at the right time," Kallas said, speaking alongside several EU commissioners as they presented a new package aimed at boosting the rapid movement of military forces across Europe and transforming the defence industry to meet emerging threats.

The initiative comes after a recent incident on a Polish railway, which the Polish authorities linked with two Ukrainians who collaborated with Russian intelligence. The event has highlighted vulnerabilities in Europe's transport networks and the urgent need to safeguard infrastructure vital for defence.

The EU's package aims to streamline cross-border military transport and strengthen coordination among member states, ensuring Europe's forces can respond quickly to emerging threats and better protect critical infrastructure.
