The death toll from a Russian bombing of an aid distribution point in Ukraine's southeastern Zaporizhzhia region on Monday (November 2) has risen to 40, with dozens missing, officials said on Wednesday (November 4), in one of the deathliest strikes on civilians this year.

Rescuers were still searching for survivors in the rubble of the former school in the village of Komyshuvakha, the acting head of the Regional Military Administration, Mykhailo Semikin, said on Wednesday (November 4).

National Police of Ukraine posted video on Telegram showing people descending to underground school as air raid alert was declared. The video shows explosion moments after.

The location of the video was confirmed from the buildings, trees, fence and damage which matched Reuters and State Emergency Service aftermath images from the scene, and satellite imagery.

The date when the video was filmed was confirmed by corroborating videos verified footage that was confirmed to be filmed on November 2 from the original file metadata. Reuters visuals taken on November 2 showed the same location.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has saod Russian forces first dropped aerial bombs on the school building as people arrived to collect aid, the struck the shelter with more bombs.

Classes have long since been suspended at the school because of its proximity to the front line, but it served as a shelter and handed out humanitarian aid every Monday, Zelenskiy said. Two members of a rescue crew and four police officers were among the dead, emergency services said.

Russia's Defense Minsitry said the attack targeted Ukrainian military units around Komyshuvakha and two other settlements, and that up to 25 Ukrainian servicemen were killed.

Russia and Ukraine both deny deliberately targeting civilians.
