A Russian missile strike on the Ukrainian town of Pryluky killed at least 18 people, including four children, Ukraine's State Emergency Service said on Wednesday (October 7).

It added that the attack also injured 55 others, among them seven children.

Rescuers continued searching through the rubble of a heavily damaged residential building after the strike, which local authorities said hit the city centre.

Footage showed a child's body being removed from rubble. Emergency workers also used cranes to remove debris and retrieve victims from the wreckage of the multi-storey building.

Residents and volunteers gathered at the site as rescue teams searched for survivors and cleared destroyed concrete structures.

Russia launched waves of missiles and drones across Ukraine on early Wednesday, in what President Volodymyr Zelenskiy described as one of the war's most "vile" attacks.

Pryluky, in the Chernihiv region, suffered the deadliest single incident of the barrage.
