X062-PORTUGAL OLA DE CALOR
Tourists in Lisbon found creative ways to cope with soaring temperatures on Wednesday (May 27), as an early heatwave gripped Portugal, sending visitors and locals in search of shade and cold drinks.
In the city centre, holidaymakers posed for photos by Lisbon’s landmarks while stopping for refreshments, with some sipping piña coladas despite the early hour.
“It’s so hot, it’s absolutely boiling. It’s uncharacteristic at this time of year,” said one English tourist, adding that a piña colada at 11 a.m. felt like a welcome way to cool down.
Climate concerns also featured among visitors, with some pointing to increasingly frequent heatwaves across the Iberian Peninsula.
Parts of Europe are sweltering under an unseasonably fierce heat wave that has shattered temperature records in Britain and France and left scientists warning of increasingly hot summers.
