STORY: A fire broke out at a Dutch asylum shelter during an anti-migrant protest in Loosdrecht on Tuesday (May 12), local media reported.

Dutch national broadcaster NOS reported that around 400 protesters gathered on Tuesday evening at the asylum centre. A fire broke out after rioters threw fireworks into the bushes in front of the building.

NOS also reported that the protesters initially tried to prevent the fire brigade from extinguishing the fire and that a police riot unit was deployed to disperse the protesters.

There were 15 asylum seekers inside the building at the time and they were not unharmed, local media reported.

Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten has called this new violent anti-asylum protest “utterly scandalous” in a post on X
