At least 22 people were killed late on Tuesday (December 9) after two buildings collapsed in Fez, one of Morocco's oldest cities and a key tourist destination.
Eyewitness videos from the scene on Wednesday (December 10) showed search and rescue teams clearing rubble while the bodies of victims were transported to the ambulances.
Reuters confirmed the location as Fez, Morocco, by the buildings, and road layout which matched satellite imagery of the area and corroborating verified footage. The date was verified by official and media corroborating reports of the incident.
One building was unoccupied, while the second was hosting an Aqiqah, a traditional Muslim celebration marking the birth of a child, the Fez prosecutor said in a statement.
A statement from the local authorities said eight families lived in the building where the celebration was taking place. Both buildings had four stories.
