A fire engulfed a residential building in Hong Kong's northern Tai Po district on Wednesday, with plumes of thick grey smoke billowing out as emergency services battled to subdue the blaze. Wang Fuk Court is a housing complex made up of eight blocks, providing close to 2,000 residential units. Several towers around the blazing tower have bamboo scaffolding on their exterior.

Around 2:45, Harry Cheung, a 66-year old resident of the housing complex, heard a loud noticed one of the blocks was on fire. He noted that he had been outside for over 3 hours since packing his stuff and vacating his apartment. Firefighters battled the blaze into the night, with thick black smoke billowing from the 31-storey towers and orange flames lighting up the night sky.

The deputy director of the local fire department said that it was difficult to conduct firefighting and search operations as the temperatures in the burning buildings were so high. (5147-HONGKONG-FIRE/NEWSER)

"The fire services department so far handled 28 casualties, and among the 28 casualties, nine were certified dead at the scene, and six of them were found to be serious and conveyed to the hospital. And at the hospital, they were later on certified dead; four of them were certified dead."

Rescued residents gathered in temporary shelters on Wednesday (November 26) following a massive fire which engulfed multiple high-rise towers of a residential complex in Hong Kong's northern Tai Po district.

At least 14 people have died and scores injured as authorities struggle to bring the blaze under control.
