Denmark is ready to defend every inch of NATO, including the kingdom of Denmark, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said in Ankara, a day after U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated that Greenland should be controlled by the U.S.
Trump's assertions that the U.S. must acquire or control Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, have long strained relations between Washington and Copenhagen — both founding NATO members — and more broadly U.S. ties with Europe. The issue has since moved to a diplomatic track. (6101-NATO-SUMMIT/ARRIVALS)

"We are ready to defend every inch of NATO, including our own territory. But one of the reasons why we have built NATO many, many years ago is if anything happens to one of us, then everybody should stand up for each other."
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte pledged to implement the deal agreed with President Donald Trump regarding Greenland at Davos, Switzerland, in January, as Trump called Greenland "a big problem" for the United States. Trump called Rutte a "great leader" despite unhappiness with NATO as a whole, saying that the U.S. had spent more than $1 trillion protecting NATO countries from Russia and "they haven't treated us right." 9. (SOUNDBITE) (English) PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING:
“Other than that, we’re having the big meeting in a little while. And I’m going to relate my problems. Greenland is a big problem for us. And the other big problem is the fact that, when we wanted them, we didn’t want them badly, but we did say: ‘if you want to join us.’ And they all said no. But when they could have, they weren’t there for us. And we’ve been there for them. We spent over $1 trillion over the last short period, trillion, in order to protect these countries from Russia. And it’s nothing to do with us, we have an ocean. But it’s been a long-term thing and they haven’t treated us right. And Mark [Rutte] understands that.”
U.S. President Donald Trump, who has harshly criticised NATO during both his first and second terms in office, said he was “very upset” with the alliance. (6179-NATO-SUMMIT/TRUMP)

"And, again, I want to say, despite the fact that I'm very upset with NATO, that we pay far, far too much. Billions and billions of dollars too much. Because it's unfair, because we're protecting them. So we protect them, but they're not there for us. Think of it, doesn't work."

U.S. President Donald Trump said he had ordered his Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to cut off all trade with Spain, calling Madrid a "terrible partner" in the alliance.
Trump, speaking alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the start of the summit in Ankara, said he wanted no business with Spain.
Trump has repeatedly expressed frustration with Spain, which has not agreed to NATO's new defence spending target of 5% of GDP and whose Socialist leadership refused to let the U.S. use its airspace or bases on its territory for the Iran war.
The United States has two important military bases in Spain: Naval Station Rota and Moron Air Base. (6169-USA-TRUMP/SPAIN)

13. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNITED STATES PRESIDENT, DONALD TRUMP, SAYING:
“I didn’t speak to Spain, Spain is a wasted cause. We don’t want to do any trade business with Spain any more by the way (inaudible). Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They don’t participate, they don’t pay. I don’t want anything to do with Spain, cut off all trade with Spain please. Including visits, okay, we don’t anything to do. Watch them come running back, oh, they’ll come running back. They treat this man terribly (points at Rutte). And this man’s a good man too, great man. They’re lucky they have him."

“I believe that Spain must stand strong. I believe that, ultimately, this man (U.S. President Donald Trump) is doing international geopolitics a disservice, and I believe that the country must always follow its own roadmap, regardless of what he wants us to do. We must not remain subservient to the United States; we must be the ones to make our own decisions and take control of our own future.”
16. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) MADRID RESIDENT ANTONIO RODRIGUEZ SAYING:
“He (Trump) just thinks we’re giving very little money. But we’re stationing soldiers everywhere. Spain is everywhere.”

NATO’s European leaders aim to convince Trump to re-commit to the military alliance at a summit in Ankara after the U.S. president revived his disputes with them over the Iran war and Greenland.
Following his arrival in the Turkish capital on Tuesday (July 7), Trump said he might have boycotted the summit had it not been for his friendship with the host, President Tayyip Erdogan, and he did not rule out further troop withdrawals from Europe. (6109-NATO-SUMMIT/)
