At least six people were killed in a fire in a 10-storey apartment tower in the Belgian city of Antwerp on Wednesday, police told local media.

Reuters saw rescuers lowering residents from the side of the building by rope. Survivors described being trapped inside until police and firefighters arrived shortly after the blaze started in the morning.

The local fire department received a call at 9:53 a.m. (0753 GMT) regarding a "raging fire" on the eighth floor of a 10-floor apartment block in the Linkeroever area of Antwerp, northern Belgium, police said.

The building, which has been evacuated, was home to more than 200 people, the police said, adding that several people were injured.

Several fire brigades from different districts were at the scene, as well as ambulances and other emergency crews.
