STORY: Thousands of Iranians marched on the streets of Tehran on Wednesday (February 11) to mark the 47th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

A crackdown on anti-government demonstrations in Iran last month has led to the killing of thousands of people in the most violent unrest since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The European Union designated the Revolutionary Guards a terrorist organisation earlier this year after the brutal nationwide crackdown, marking a symbolic shift in Europe's approach to Iran's leadership.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who positioned one aircraft carrier in the region during the crackdown, held off intervening militarily in December, but said on Tuesday (February 10) that he was considering sending a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East, even as Washington and Tehran prepare to resume negotiations aimed at averting a new conflict.
