STORY: U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday (November 25) backed away from a Thursday deadline for Ukraine to agree to a U.S.-backed peace plan, saying "the deadline for me is when it's over."

Trump, speaking to reporters on board Air Force One as he flew to Florida for the Thanksgiving holiday, said U.S. negotiators were making progress in discussions with Russia and Ukraine, and Moscow had agreed to some concessions. He did not detail them.

A U.S.-based framework for ending the war, first reported last week, prompted fresh concerns that the Trump administration might be willing to push Ukraine to sign a peace deal heavily tilted toward Moscow.

Trump said his envoy Steve Witkoff would be traveling to Moscow soon to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and that his son-in-law Jared Kushner, who helped negotiate the Gaza deal that brought about an uneasy ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war, was also involved.

Trump in recent days had set the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday as the day when he wanted to see Ukraine agree to a deal to bring about an end to Russia's war in Ukraine.

But he and his aides have backed away from a firm deadline and now say they would like an agreement as soon as possible.

Trump said it appeared that Russia had the upper hand in the war and that it would be in Ukraine's best interests to reach an agreement.

He said some Ukraine territory "might be gotten by Russia anyway" over the next couple of months.

"I don't have a deadline, I just ...you know what the deadline for me is, when it's over and I think everybody is tired of fighting in this moment. They're losing too many people."

"(TRUMP IS ASKED IF ZELENSKIY IS COMING FOR A VISIT) We're having good. I don't know. He would like to come, but I think we should get a deal done first. We're having good talks. We started with Russia, we're having some talks with Russia. Ukraine is doing well. I think they're pretty happy about it. They'd like to see it end. And we won't know for a little while, but we're making progress."

5. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT, DONALD TRUMP, SAYING:

''That was just a map. All that was was a map, that was not a plan, it was a concept. And from there they're taking, each one of the 28 points, and then you get down to 22 points, a lot of them were solved. And actually very favorably so. We'll see what happens. (WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT JEFF MASON OF REUTERS ASKS IF UKRAINE WAS ASKED TO GIVE TOO MUCH LAND BACK TO RUSSIA) Look, the way it's going, if you look, it's just moving on one direction. So eventually that's land that over the next couple of months might be gotten by Russia anyway. So, do you want to fight and lose another 50-60,000 people? Or do you want to do something now. In some cases the land is going in the other direction. So, they're negotiating, they are trying to get it done. You want to have a border? You can't have a border that goes through a highway, or a border that goes through the middle of a town, so it doesn't work. So, it's a long, complicated process. It's very sad because so many people are being killed. (MASON ASKS TRUMP WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP) They are going to keep talking. They're talking to Russia now. Steve Witkoff is going over, maybe with Jared, I am not sure about Jared going, but he's involved in the process, smart guy, and they're going to be meeting with President Putin, I believe next week in Moscow. (MASON ASKS NEXT WEEK IN MOSCOW?) I think so."

7. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT, DONALD TRUMP, SAYING:

"This war could go one for years, and Russia's got a lot more people, a lot more soldiers. So, I think if Ukraine can make a deal that's a good thing. I think it's great for both, frankly I think it's great for both. But Ukraine's got, is much smaller, is a much smaller group of people, they've lost a lot of people. Russia has lost a lot of people. But Russia has a much bigger pool of people."
