Europeans and US citizens in Brussels on Tuesday (November 4) celebrated the Democrats seizing control of both the Senate and House in sweeping victories in Republican strongholds for the first time in generations as tens of millions of voters delivered a scathing rebuke to President Donald Trump.

Voters in conservative bastions who had propelled the president to his second term in office just two years ago swung dramatically toward Democrats, fueled by deep frustration over the unpopular war with Iran, anxiety over the high cost of living and anger at Trump's stewardship of the country.

It was as if, because he was succeeding, the right-wing political forces here also had support through him. And so... maybe now after seeing me on TV, he might come after me. But I don't care, I'm extremely happy."

"On Europe, I think it's overrated what the impact will be. I mean, so many things have been set in motion that will continue. I do think the wake up call that Trump created has, in a way, been good for Europe. And I hope that Europe will continue on that track to be more self-reliant, to take an independent position in many cases, especially on defense and security. I do hope that the ties with the Americans will get more positive. So we'll see. So by and large, optimistic, but very careful."

It just reminded me of the day after Obama was elected. And it just felt like it's going to be okay. Like, the right people are making the right decisions. And I have not felt that way in over a decade."

"This is the first day that I've lived in Europe that I haven't apologized for being an American. Like I actually feel differently. I was always so proud to be American. I was proud of what our country stood for and what we have achieved."
