X008-MEXICO INVESTIGACION TIROTEO PIRAMIDE
STORY: A shooter at Mexico's pyramids near Mexico City acted alone and his attack was planned, according to Mexican authorities, a day after the tragedy claimed the life of a Canadian tourist and injured 13 other visitors.
An armed man with a pistol opened fire on tourists in broad daylight on Monday (April 20) at the top of the Pyramid of the Moon at the archaeological site, located about 50 kilometers from the capital, causing scenes of panic before taking his own life with a gunshot.
At President Claudia Sheinbaum's daily press conference, authorities from the State of Mexico, where Teotihuacan is located, said that seven of the 13 injured suffered gunshot wounds and that six had already been discharged from the hospital.
The injured are from Canada, the United States, Colombia, Russia, Brazil, and the Netherlands, officials said.
Jose Luis Cervantes, attorney general of the State of Mexico, said the attacker fired 14 times—at the victims and at members of the National Guard—and that all indications suggest he suffered from psychopathy, based on several notes he was carrying.

9. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) MEXICO STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL, JOSE LUIS CERVANTES, SAYING:
"A man named Julio Cesar Jasso Ramirez took his own life. While the National Guard was repelling the attack, he was wounded in one leg—we believe this because he had an impact wound to the leg—and at the moment he was being subdued by the National Guard, he seized the firearm, and witnesses consistently state that he acted against himself from a distance of no more than 15 centimeters."
10. WHITE FLASH
11. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) MEXICO STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL, JOSE LUIS CERVANTES, SAYING:
"The evidence collected so far, on a preliminary basis, points to a psychopathic profile of the attacker, characterized by a tendency to imitate situations that occurred in other places, at other times, and involving other individuals. This tendency, which can be referred to as copycat behavior, is sometimes improperly replicated in certain countries, and in this case it is an indication, an investigative hypothesis, that this is what occurred."
12. WHITE FLASH
13. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) MEXICO STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL, JOSE LUIS CERVANTES, SAYING:
"The investigative acts carried out indicate that this was not a spontaneous act. We know this person made several preliminary visits to the archaeological site, stayed beforehand in nearby hotels, and from there preplanned and carried out reconnaissance of the places he would use to commit his violent act. The attacker planned and carried out his actions alone."
