X007-JAPON METEORITO AZUL
TORY: A live camera recording caught the moment a ball of light briefly lit up the night sky in Kagoshima late on Tuesday (August 19).
Local media NHK reported that the “fireball”, which experts say was a particularly bright shooting star, was seen in various parts of Kyushu and Shikoku.
Reuters was able to confirm the location by the buildings, bridge and volcano layout which matched file and satellite imagery of the area. The date was verified by the timestamp seen on the footage.
Toshihisa Maeda, the director of the Sendai Space Museum described the “fireball” as a phenomenon in which dust particles or asteroid fragments from outer space glow brightly as they enter the atmosphere and burn up. “I imagine the surrounding area became as bright as day for a moment, and it's possible that it fell into the ocean as a meteorite," Maeda said.
