A previous passenger of the Hondius, the cruise ship currently hit by a hantavirus outbreak, shared video he took inside the ship with Reuters on Tuesday (May 5) from a trip he took in December last year.

Around 150 people are stuck on the Hondius, which was carrying mostly British, American and Spanish passengers on a luxury cruise that set off from the southern tip of Argentina in late March. The cruise visited the Antarctic peninsula and South Georgia and Tristan da Cunha - some of the remotest islands on the planet.

A Dutch couple and a German national have died, while a British national was evacuated from the ship and is in intensive care in South Africa, officials said. Three more suspected cases affect people who are still on board, one of whom has a mild fever.

Robert Vagueiro, who took the trip in December, said he had "no issues with cleanliness" on board, adding via email: "The cabins and their bathrooms were cleaned daily, and the sheets and towels were cleaned regularly. Common areas were also very clean, especially considering the amount of foot traffic in those areas."

Reuters verified the vessel’s identity from its exterior features, name on ship, dining room, library and the cabin which matched archive imagery of the MV Hondius. The date when the video was recorded was verified from videos the passenger uploaded in December 2025 of himself onboard. The vessel’s schedule also shows it was on a voyage in December 2025.

The World Health Organization said on Tuesday that it suspects some rare human to human transmission took place between close contacts on board a luxury cruise ship hit by seven confirmed or suspected hantavirus cases.
