STORY: Hundreds gathered in Southampton on Tuesday (June 2) to protest the killing of Henry Nowak who was handcuffed as he lay dying from stab wounds.

The protest began outside Southampton Central Police Station before marching to near the crime scene and resulting in clashes with police.

Protesters threw bricks, bins and other objects at police officers, who pushed back with pepper spray and used riot shields.

The protest drew a few hundred people chanting "I can’t breathe", including anti-immigration activist Tommy Robinson.

British police faced a national backlash on Tuesday over the inflammatory case of the 18-year-old student who was handcuffed as he lay dying from stab wounds after his killer falsely alleged a racist attack.

Henry Nowak died after the knife attack in the southern England city of Southampton last December.

His killer Vickrum Digwa, a 23-year-old Sikh man, was sentenced to life in prison on Monday (June 1), having lied to police at the time that Nowak had assaulted him.

Other protests have been advertised for this week.

“What happened to Henry should never have happened. I'm sorry, but where’s, where's the charge if you're innocent until proven guilty. You know, ‘why was he not taken off in handcuffs?’ I think the key matter is all lives matter, not just certain. And as a mother who's already lost a son, I don't think that the government or the police have handled the situation at all. Why have we not heard that the police officer’s standing down and being investigated? You know, it seems to be two-tier across the country. It's one rule for them, one rule for us and it’s gotta end.”

“Well we’re here because of what's happened to the young lad that got stabbed. Two-tier policing is disgusting in this country.
