STORY: U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (January 27) that Alex Pretti, the man fatally shot by a federal agent during a confrontation in Minneapolis over the weekend, should not have been carrying a gun.

Trump also said the administration’s border czar, Tom Homan, had met with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and was expected to meet Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey later on Tuesday.

The move to put Homan in charge of the immigration operation in Minneapolis in place of Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino, who sources said is leaving after having led most of Trump's crackdowns in Democratic-led cities, is part of a broader reset by the president to soften his administration's aggressive tactics.

“We’ve talked about Minnesota, in Minnesota you probably read there, the crime is way down. You know why? Because we took out thousands of criminals out of Minnesota and that's why it's good. Tom Homan is there, we all love Tom. And he met with the governor, met with the mayor, he’s going to meet with the mayor I guess. And its going very well. But remember this, even Minnesota their crime is down. And you know why its down? Because of what we did. We took out thousands of criminals, career criminals, bad criminals.”

TRUMP: “I do that all the time, I shake up teams. Everybody here, these are lot of owners of farms and places and you shake up your team if they can't do the crops fast enough. And look, we have an incredible team. We did something that nobody said was possible. We didn't go back to Congress and ask for legislation. We closed the border. And in the last eight months they have, and this is actually hard to believe, nobody crossed the border. Nobody. They say nobody, I don't even know if that's possible.”

TRUMP: “Well, I haven't heard that about that. Certainly he shouldn't have been carrying a gun. But all of… hey, look, bottom line, everybody in this room we view that as a very unfortunate incident. Everyone, unless you're a stupid person. Very, very unfortunate incident. I don't like that he had a gun. I don't like that he had two fully loaded magazines. That's a lot of bad stuff. And despite that, I'd say that's very unfortunate.”
