U.S. President Donald Trump acknowledged that the war in Iran played a role in Republicans' losses in Tuesday's (November 3) midterm elections, as Democrats prepared to take control of both the US House and Senate and challenge his legislative agenda.

In an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Trump said Democrats would send legislation he considered "insane" to his desk and that he would veto it.

"They'll send over things that are insane, and I'll veto them," he said. "And after a couple of months of vetoes, they'll call and they'll say, 'How do we get this stuff done?' And we'll work together."

Trump said the war in Iran had weighed on Republican candidates, even as voters backed his handling of it. "I think a part of it was Iran, but at the same time people understood the importance of what I've done with Iran," he said.

1. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING:

“I think a part of it was Iran. But at the same time, people understood the importance of what I've done with Iran. I think, historically, it's going to be much more important than this evening, because you can't let the number one state sponsor of terror have a nuclear weapon. You know it's the most dangerous country in the world, and we wiped them out, practically.”

“It's been done before, as you know, numerous times. And it's a power of veto. It's one of the stronger powers that a president has, and they'll send over things that are insane, and I'll veto them. And after a couple of months of vetoes, they'll call and they'll say, ‘how do we get this stuff done?’ And we'll work together. I have a lot of friends that are Democrats, believe it or not”

5. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT, DONALD TRUMP, SAYING:

“And I think the Democrats did a good job. I really do. I think they did a good job. They fought hard. They've been fighting for a long time. They've been fighting me for a long time. This fight's been going on for ages. I started in really, if you look at it, I've been doing it for twelve years with them, and I've come up on top all the time.”

7. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT, DONALD TRUMP, SAYING:

"And I wasn’t on the ballot. If I was on the ballot they would have gotten out. Look, they got out for the rallies. You never saw rallies that big. I mean, outside of the rallies I have when I have you know, the general election, which is, you know, a step above, in all fairness, like maybe a few steps above. Outside of that, I mean, these were the biggest rallies ever. Nobody's ever seen anything like that. So I'm a little bit surprised. I thought that I could transfer those people into candidates, but maybe in certain cases - you know, don't forget, we had a lot of candidates that did win also. But in certain cases, they didn't win. I felt badly about Darline (Graham). I felt very badly. She's gone through, you know her relationship with Lindsay, was extraordinary, she was just essentially mourning and campaigning at the same time. And then on top of it, this happens. But I'm a little surprised. I thought they'd do better."
