STORY: Protesters on Tuesday (January 27) celebrated the departure of Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino, after he was removed from his role as the U.S. Border Patrol’s “commander at large.”

Bovino will leave Minnesota along with some of the agents deployed with him and return to his former post in California, where he is expected to retire soon, The Atlantic reported on Monday, citing a Department of Homeland Security official and two people familiar with the change.

The decision to install Tom Homan to lead the operation in place of Bovino is part of a broader reset by President Donald Trump aimed at easing his administration’s aggressive posture in Minneapolis, sources said. Advisers have raised concerns that Saturday’s killing of 37-year-old Pretti by federal officers, which sparked national outrage, could undermine Trump’s immigration agenda.

Bovino had become a leading public face of Trump’s deportation drive, frequently appearing at the head of heavily armed federal agents deployed on city streets in Democratic-led cities.
