A Russian air attack on Ukraine's capital Kyiv struck a residential area on Wednesday (September 30), killing two people and injuring a 17-year-old boy, local officials said.

Reuters video from the scene showed a house reduced to rubble as rescuers searched through the wreckage and worked to extinguish fires.

Neighbours Leonid Bidniuk, 70, and Larysa Bidniuk, 65, said the owner of the destroyed house, a serviceman named Oleh, had been trying to fight the blaze after the strike.

"The neighbour was on the roof ... trying to take out the fire. The child was screaming. It was clearly out of grief, as his mother had apparently died," said the 70-year-old.

Larysa Bidniuk said she later approached Oleh near the scene. "He'd just been standing by the car. I went over and asked, 'Are you all right?' He said, 'Yevheniia is dead, and so is her mother.'"
