STORY: Hundreds of Guatemalans were moved to shelters on Tuesday (August 4) as Volcan de Fuego erupted, prompting authorities to declare a red alert in the region. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) said 1,699 residents near the volcano had been moved to shelters, adding that the red alert was issued to urge people to leave their homes for safety. Five shelters had been set up, authorities said, and three more were being prepared. Volcan de Fuego remains in active eruption, with strong emissions of ash, gases and lava, Guatemala's National Institute for Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) said in its latest bulletin. Officials warned material from the volcano could reach altitudes of nearly 23,000 feet (over 7,000 meters) and travel up to 120 km (74 miles). Authorities said 18 communities were urged to evacuate, adding that the main reason some residents resisted leaving was fear of looting. Reuters was not able to verify the exact location that the videos were filmed at. However, local and national Guatemalan media also reported on the eruption and subsequent evacuations. "We were almost among the first to leave our house. We were waiting for the bus there at the entrance to Santo Domingo, waiting for them to bring us here, because we are afraid. And if God gives us the opportunity to leave, why wouldn't we leave? Now, when our time comes, even if we run, then it's our time — what can we do, right? But as long as God gives us the opportunity to leave, we are going to leave. But we do have this feeling that we don't know what is going to happen, how the volcano is, whether it has calmed down or not, waiting for a positive response to see if we can go back now or not yet."

"It was when we saw that the volcano was already far too explosive, so we had to make the decision to leave because it was either our lives or our belongings. “Up to this point, we could say that approximately 30 hours have passed — around 30 hours. If we are considering that this window is 72 hours (ed's note: referring to the time frame since the eruptive phase began), that means we still need to wait and understand the volcano's behavior for another 42 hours. We are essentially talking about almost two more days during which we have this window to understand the nature of what the volcano may do and what could happen. However, at this moment, as we have mentioned, the explosive phase continues. The fact that ash cannot be seen, that the gases — which are important, and which people refer to as smoke — cannot be seen, that this smoke cannot be seen coming from the volcano, does not mean that the activity has stopped.”
