Passengers infected with the deadly hantavirus were evacuated by boat from a cruise ship at Praia port on Tuesday (May 5), ahead of a planned air ambulance transfer.

Video footage showed evacuation boat ferrying the sick passengers from the berthed vessel to shore.

Cape Verde's health ministry said that three passengers infected with the virus are expected to be evacuated in the coming hours in two air ambulances.

Hantavirus is a rare but serious infection that can cause severe respiratory illness. The cruise ship remains docked at Praia port as authorities manage the medical emergency.

The cruise line has not yet commented on how the passengers may have contracted the virus or whether additional cases have been identified aboard the vessel.
