STORY: Injured Iranians sat looking stunned on a street curb in the aftermath of Israeli strikes on Tehran on Friday (June 13) that have put the Middle East on edge.

Israel said early on Friday that it struck Iran and targeted its nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories and military commanders. Israel warned it would be a prolonged operation to prevent Tehran from building an atomic weapon.

A state of emergency has been declared in Israel in anticipation of retaliatory missile and drone strikes.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards corps said in a statement on Friday that Israel will pay a heavy price for its attack which killed Hossein Salami, the Guards' top commander.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday (June 12) called Israel's strikes against Iran a "unilateral action" and said Washington was not involved while also urging Tehran not to target U.S. interests or personnel in the region.

The White House said late on Thursday (June 12) that President Donald Trump will attend a National Security Council meeting on Friday morning.
