Churchill Falls, Canadá

STORY: Firefighters rushed to control a wildfire in the Canadian town of Churchill Falls on Thursday (May 29), as authorities warned local residents to be cautious amid an early forest fire season in the northeastern province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Authorities said crews and two water bombers had been deployed to tackle the fire, estimated to be 170 hectares and located 1 km (0.6 mile) east of Churchill Falls.

Local broadcaster CBC, citing the forestry department's wildfire program director Craig Coady, said the risk to Churchill Falls was decreasing, but said the fire was still considered out of control because of dry weather conditions.

Elsewhere, Manitoba declared a state of emergency and urged thousands of people in northern and eastern parts of the province to evacuate on Wednesday (May 28), as wildfires spread in central and western Canada.
