Seúl (Corea del Sur)

STORY: Surveillance footage released by the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office on Tuesday (June 25) captured the moment a man lit a fire on a packed subway in the South Korean capital last month.

The footage showed passengers fleeing after the suspect doused the floor of a carriage on the Seoul Subway Line 5 with flammable liquid before setting it ablaze on the morning of May 31.

In the video, one passenger trying to escape was seen slipping and falling on the floor moments before the fire was lit. The smoke drifts into an adjacent carriage, packed with commuters, before people are seen escaping through the doors.

Six people were injured, according to the prosecutors’ office. No deaths were reported.

Investigators said the suspect, driven by delusions over a divorce ruling, meticulously planned the arson by purchasing gasoline, disposing of his assets, and scouting major Seoul subway stations the day before the attack.

The prosecutors’ office said on Tuesday it indicted the 67-year-old man on charges of attempted murder and arson.

The last major accident on a South Korean subway system was in 2003 when 192 were killed in a subway fire in the city of Daegu, which prompted major safety improvements.
