V075-UCRANIA FLORES LUGAR BOMBARDEO
Ukrainians mourned the victims of Thursday's massive Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital which killed at least 23 people and injured dozens.
Flags flew at half-mast in Kyiv on Friday (August 29) in tribute to the victims, people laid flowers and toys at a makeshift memorial next to a residential building part destroyed by a Russian missile.
"I understand that there is a war going on and military targets may be bombed but why would they lie to the whole world saying they only target military objects while in fact they keep attacking civilians deliberately? " said Olha Synytsia, a local resident standing next to the memorial full of children's toys and flowers.
"This is not the first house, not the second, not the third. There have been so many," she said.
Russia pounded Ukraine with deadly missiles and drone strikes early on Thursday (August 28) in a sweeping attack that the U.S. special envoy on Ukraine said undermined President Donald Trump's peace efforts.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the strike, the second-largest attack since Russia launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022, was Moscow's answer to diplomatic efforts to end its war.
Moscow has regularly denied targeting civilians. Ukrainian officials say scores of civilians have died in Russian strikes on densely populated areas in recent months, and thousands since the start of the war.
