V072-IRAN FUNERAL DEL JEFE DE LA INTELIGENCIA ISMAIL KHATIV
Iranians attended on Friday (March 20) the funeral of Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib at Tehran's Grand Mosque, Reuters footage showed.
A truck carrying two coffins, one belonging to Khatib and another to a staff member, moved through crowds who held pictures of Khatib and Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Israel targeted Khatib on Wednesday (March 18), a day after killing powerful security chief Ali Larijani. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said "no one in Iran has immunity and everyone is in the crosshairs."
He and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had authorized the Israeli military "to target any senior Iranian official for whom an intelligence and operational opportunity arises, without the need for additional approval."
Iran has retaliated by firing cluster missiles at Israel, which are harder to intercept.
Khatib, a hardliner cleric and politician, worked in Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's office and was mentored by him before heading the civilian intelligence apparatus in August 2021.
