A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck offshore in the southern Philippines on Friday (October 10), killing at least two people and causing structural damage in towns near the epicentre. Authorities have warned of strong aftershocks.

Visuals from the Panabo City Fire Station show fire trucks swaying during the powerful quake, as people nearby took cover. A damage assessment was later conducted after cracks were found in several establishments across the city.

The quake was among the strongest in recent years to hit the Philippines, which sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" and experiences more than 800 quakes each year.

It came two weeks after the Philippines experienced its deadliest earthquake in more than a decade with 74 people killed on the central island of Cebu following an offshore quake of magnitude 6.9.

An eyewitness video, verified by Reuters, showed residents massed outside buildings in Mindanao's Butuan city following the earthquake. Some people crouched for safety. (2391-PHILIPPINES-QUAKE/UGC 3)

A resident in Davao City recalled the panic and fear he and others felt when the strong earthquake rocked their city. Jaypee Panuncio, 28, filmed overhead cables and vehicles shaking during the quake on his mobile phone. His video also showed people holding on to cars, with one person crouching beside a vehicle for safety. (2398-PHILIPPINES-QUAKE/EYEWITNESS)

Another video verified by Reuters showed toppled cabinets in an office and a mast on building roof shaking. The Seismology agency Phivolcs warned of damage and aftershocks from the strong quake, which struck in waters off Manay town in Davao Oriental in the Mindanao region.

It revised down the magnitude from an initial reading of 7.6 to 7.5, and put the depth of the quake at 20 km (12 miles). (2335-PHILIPPINES-QUAKE/UGC)

Authorities issued evacuation orders and people in Koronadal City, General Santos City, Cagayan De Oro City and Tacloban moved out of buildings, some standing on roadsides while awaiting further instructions.

Richie Diuyen, a disaster official in Manay, said the quake lasted 30 to 40 seconds and damaged some homes and the facade of a church, while leaving cracked roads and unpassable bridges.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr also said authorities were assessing the situation and search-and-rescue teams would fan out once it was safe. (2349-PHILIPPINES-QUAKE/EVACUATION)
