Palestinians, including rescue workers and residents of the area, searched through the rubble on Friday (September 26), pulling out casualties, in the aftermath of an Israeli strike on a building in Gaza City.

At Al Shifa hospital, mourners gathered to bid farewell for loved ones killed in Israeli strikes.

Israel has regularly said it takes steps to avoid hitting civilians. Israel says it is seeking to eliminate militants from Hamas, which attacked southern Israel from Gaza in 2023, and free hostages still held by the group.

Israeli tanks have entered Gaza City as part of an offensive that Israel says is intended to eliminate Hamas following its deadly attack on Israel in October 2023 but which has caused extensive destruction, a humanitarian catastrophe and widespread hunger.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Gaza City is the Palestinian militant group's last bastion, but hundreds of thousands of civilians remain there, fearing there is nowhere safe for them to go.

About 1,200 people were killed, according to Israeli tallies, and 251 were taken hostage in the Hamas-led attack on Israel. About 48 hostages remain in captivity, with 20 of them believed to be alive.

Israel's military campaign in Gaza has killed more than 65,000 Palestinians, according to local health authorities.
