Caracas, Venezuela

Venezuela’s acting president Delcy Rodriguez supervised the dispatch of aid on Friday (June 26) after deadly earthquakes, with authorities rushing assistance to affected areas.

Rodriguez said 2,600 tonnes of food, including protein and dry goods, were being sent to some 69,000 families in La Guaira state.

“These trucks have to depart right now to deliver food and water in the affected areas,” Rodriguez said on Venezuela´s government TV.

Food Minister Carlos Leal Telleria said supplies were ready for distribution and that authorities hoped people would have access to water and food within 24 hours.

The quakes that struck near Caracas killed at least 235 people, according to the government, with thousands reported missing. Rescuers continued searching through rubble as international aid began to arrive.
