A new wave of severe cold is set to grip Ukraine from Friday (January 30), with heavy precipitation and a sharp drop in temperatures expected across much of the country, emergency services said.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service warned that from February 1-3, temperatures could plunge to as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius (-22°F) in some areas, issuing a red-level danger alert.
The bitter weather comes as Russia agreed to a request from U.S. President Donald Trump to halt airstrikes on Kyiv until Sunday (February 1).
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Friday (January 30) there was no formal truce and that Russia had shifted its attacks to Ukrainian logistics, including roads and railways.
Kyiv has been struggling with the fallout from earlier strikes on energy infrastructure that left hundreds of thousands without heating during sub-zero temperatures.
Zelenskiy said 378 residential high-rise buildings in the capital remained without heating
