Alcer do Sal, Portugal

Large parts of the Portuguese town of Alcacer do Sal remained partially submerged for a third day on Friday (February 6) after Storm Leonardo caused the River Sado to overflow, flooding streets and riverside areas.

Deolinda, a 78-years-old fisherwoman in the municipality, said everything had been destroyed by the extreme heaavy rains.

Water levels appeared to ease slightly as the tide receded, but many homes and businesses were left damaged after days underwater.

Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said on Thursday (February 5) his government had extended a state of calamity in 69 municipalities until mid-February, adding "unprecedented" rainfall and flood risks threatened several regions.

“In my view, this will not fill up as it did (with the next storm Marta), I think, I'm a fisherwoman and I know very well what I'm saying. When this (storm) started, I told the owner of Murganheira there: ‘A flood is coming like one that's never come before’, he said ‘don't tell me that,’ ‘I'm telling you’. Yesterday, down there by the guard post, they came to tell me, ‘Mrs. Deolinda, you were the only one who was right; everything you said turned out to be correct’. Since I was 7 years old, I've been here, and now I'm 78. I'm a fisherwoman and I know very well what the sea and the weather are like—I know it with my eyes closed.”
