Santiago de Chile, Chile

Drone footage on Friday (October 9) shows streets across a Santiago neighbourhood covered in mud and debris, with vehicles stuck in the sludge after flash floods struck the Chilean capital.

Heavy machinery were seen clearing debris from roadways while residents checked their vehicles amid the wreckage.

Heavy rains lashed the capital and the surrounding region on Thursday (October 8), triggering landslides that swept cars through streets, flooded homes and forced residents to evacuate.

At least six people were injured, authorities said.

The government declared a state of emergency in Las Condes, an upscale suburb east of Santiago. The floods hit the district as a storm front moved over the Santiago Metropolitan Region.

Chile’s disaster agency, Senapred, said heavy rain filled creeks and mountain ravines that normally stay dry for much of the year and fill quickly during storms. The water from those channels caused the flooding, it added.
