Poland officially received its first F-35 stealth fighters on Friday (June 12), bringing the state-of-the-art jets to NATO's eastern flank.

The U.S.-built F-35 is a fifth generation fighter, capable of striking both ground and air targets. The jets have been in U.S. service since 2015 and have earned a reputation in conflicts in the Middle East, including U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki praised Polish relations with the United States, saying the two countries' partnership was "very much needed," while U.S. Under Secretary of State Thomas DiNanno said Poland was a "model ally."

Poland, which borders Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, has ordered 32 F-35s for its air force and is the first of NATO's eastern flank members to receive the jets.
