SHOWS: U.S. President Donald Trump said on April 16, after announcing a 10-day Lebanon-Israel ceasefire, that leaders of the two countries could meet at the White House over the next week or two.

Trump spoke to both leaders as the ceasefire was announced. He said he was working on a longer-term deal.

“It's very exciting. I think we're going to have a deal where we're going to have a meeting, first time in 44 years, and Lebanon will be meeting with Israel, and they're probably going to do it at the White House over the next week or two," Trump said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on April 16 that he has agreed to a temporary 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon to give time to forge U.S. President Donald Trump's initiative for a peace deal between Israel and Lebanon.

In a video statement, Netanyahu said a peace deal must include the dismantling of Iran-backed Hezbollah militants. He added that Israeli forces will remain in southern Lebanon.

9. (SOUNDBITE) (Hebrew) ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER, BENJAMIN NETANYAHU, SAYING:

"In these peace talks, we have two fundamental demands: First, the disarmament of Hezbollah. Second, a sustainable peace agreement, peace through strength. In order to achieve the ceasefire, Hezbollah insisted on two conditions: The first condition was that Israel must withdraw from all Lebanese territory up to the international border. The second condition was a ceasefire based on a “quiet for quiet” arrangement. I did not agree to either of these, and indeed, neither of these conditions is being met."

Israelis in Haifa and Tel Aviv on April 16 expressed mixed feelings after U.S. President Donald Trump said that Israel and Lebanon had agreed to begin a 10-day ceasefire at 5 p.m. EST (2100 GMT), signalling a pause in Israel's conflict with Iran-backed Hezbollah that has raged in parallel to the war with Iran.
