Recent footage released by the Danish military showed its troops training in the Nuuk area following intense focus on Greenland after U.S. President Donald Trump renewed his interest in acquiring the territory.

The Danish military said it sent extra troops to the Arctic island “in the wake of the increased focus on security in the Arctic and North Atlantic Area” as part of an exercise dubbed “Arctic Endurance”.

Trump said on Thursday (January 22) he had secured total and permanent U.S. access to Greenland in a deal with NATO, whose head said allies would have to step up their commitment to Arctic security to ward off threats from Russia and China.

News of a framework deal came as Trump backed off tariff threats against Europe and ruled out taking Greenland by force, bringing a degree of respite in what was brewing to be the biggest rupture in transatlantic ties in decades.
